Protests continued on Friday 26 November at the construction site in Observatory, Cape Town, where Amazon plans to build its Africa HQ. The American shopping giant will be the anchor tenant, though not the only tenant, of the planned development. But protesters say it is on a site of particular historical significance to local indigenous people. The site is where the first battle between the Portuguese setters and indigenous people took place, on 1 March 1510. The Battle of Salt River. Tauriq Jenkins, high commissioner of the Goringhaicona Khoi-Khoi Indigenous Traditional Council said today’s protest is in solidarity with the global ‘Amazon Must Pay’ campaign, which highlights what campaigners say is the mistreatment of workers by the online retail giant. More than 100 people attended the protest outside the site of the planned development. They have vowed to continue the protest in order to save ancestral land.
