OCA Update – July 2018

This is an excerpt from the OCA newsletter of 26 July 2018. Subscribe to OCA Monthly Updates here.

The next meeting of the OCA committee is 6.30pm, Thursday 26 July. You can get minutes from our last meeting here.

Here are a few highlights from the past month:

Malta Park: Local filmmaker Munashe Makado has produced a short video to promote the campaign against the leasing and fencing of Malta Park and privatisation of public spaces in Cape Town. Watch it here.

Large Developments: Our workshop on understanding the city’s building and development processes on 14 July was a success! (Workshop report here.) A number of interested people could not make that date, so we will run it again on a date in August. Please email [email protected] if you would be interested in attending. We hope to develop the materials into a toolkit which we will post on the OCA website.

In the first week of August, the OCA plans to conduct a survey of Obs residents to gauge attitudes and understanding of affordable housing. This follows a workshop discussion on affordable housing issues in April this year, where we decided to get the views of the wider Obs community. This survey will be conducted with the assistance of students from North-Eastern University in Boston, who plan to do door-to-door data collection from next week. Please help us make this survey a success if you are a household selected for interview!

The OCA continues to maintain an interactive map of major developments in Obs – get more info here.

Bike to work, 27 July: On Friday morning, a ‘Bike2Work’ bike bus will pass Observatory on the way from Claremont to the CBD. Any Observatorians interested in joining and helping to promote cycle commuting can get details here.

Obs Welcome Pack: OCA members may be interested in the Obs Welcome Pack, setting out the key things to know about the area: https://tinyurl.com/OCA-ObsWelcomePack

Tell your neighbours: We want to make this monthly newsletter available to Obs residents who are not currently OCA members. If you know someone who would find this newsletter useful, please invite them to subscribe here.
