So what exactly does the Obs Civic (OCA) do?

  1. Comment on Land Use and heritage applications sent to the City and HWC (about 40 per annum) [A&H portfolio]
  2. Comment on City policies for which public comment is requested
  3. Some comments are substantial (e.g. Municipal Planning bylaw), some are minor. 
  4. Comment on Liquor license applications in Obs.
  5. Attend Ward Committee meetings [though we are not members] and engage the Ward Councillor.
  6. Engage OBSID over projects of mutual interest [OBSID COO attends OCA meetings]
  7. Hold public (Town Hall) meetings of relevance to Observatory
  8. Support community projects (e.g. Obs journey, Obs CAN). Address basic needs of the homeless/people living on streets and other vulnerable populations.
  9. Nominated 7 sites in Observatory for Provincial Heritage Status – working with owners, HWC and CoCT to secure these nominations.
  10. Cultural projects (e.g. community theatre, seeking funding for a documentary on the old Bantu Administration (pass laws) building in Fir St)
  11. Manage and maintain the Pepper Square car park
  12. Manage membership and finance (bookkeeping, annual financial statement, SARS S18A compliance, DSD reporting as NPO)
  13. Host an Annual AGM
  14. Hosts Mancomm meetings open to all on the last Tuesday of each month
  15. OCA produces up to 40 newsletters a year – circulating local, regional and international information of relevance to Obs residents
  16. OCA hosts a website with information (www.obs.org.za) and a Facebook page.
  17. About to host on the website an interactive map of developments, liquor licenses, etc
  18. OCA hosts visitors/researchers/students
  19. OCA sometimes asked to give talks
  20. OCA involved in cross-ward initiative to develop collective approaches across the civics in our ward – regular meetings to develop a coordinating structure
  21. OCA refers inquiries to appropriate services that are received on our email address [email protected]
